It's Friday! I don't know about you, but I'm doing a happy dance. The Medstud should be home in a few hours after another busy 30+hour shift and his last (for now) in trauma surgery. He begins general surgery next week at a different hospital. Although we have enjoyed these years of medical school and have made the most of our time, it'll be refreshing to enter at a more consistent pace of life come 2016's graduation. Grateful to our God who has seen us through and has been gracious to this family of 5! :)

Kid's Activity: Dark vs. Light
"This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin." 1 John 1:5-7
Using this verse as your lesson, blindfold your kid(s). Have him attempt to go about his usual afternoon walking in "darkness." Maybe instruct him to go to a certain area of the house or to grab a toy. Of course, he should be stumbling about and tripping himself up (if this isn't your child he may be able to see, start over lol).
Before removing the blindfold place a treat of some sort on the kitchen table. Remove the blindfold. Ask your child, "was it hard to walk in the dark?" "What did it feel like not to have the light?" " Would you rather walk in darkness or the light." Probe their heart a bit and talk about what life without Jesus is like. Point them to the Light. Maybe read a few other verses on dark vs. light. Then point them to their need for God, who is light. Lastly, say something like, "now that you have light, can you find something you enjoy" (give a hint if needed). This is the kids' favorite part. I remember when my oldest arrow exclaimed, "because we have light we can see good things." Was grateful for that small teachable moment.
If you think this lesson is simple. It should be. Something I now ask the kids when they are acting in a way contrary to the Word of God is, "are you walking in light or darkness right now." Because we have done this lesson and have read these verses at different times, they know what I'm talking about.
*Note: These kinds of activities should help our children form a Christian worldview. This and any other activity that points them to Christ will not save them. Salvation is of the Lord. Pray, be faithful and trust.
